Famed for his stance on morality, Lincoln here expounds on his views about being right and standing with those that are right.

- Letter to Isham Reavis (5 November 1855)
Written in a letter by Lincoln to one Isham Reavis, who was engaged in the process of becoming a lawyer. The above quote was part of Lincoln’s response. Also notable in the same letter was, “If you are resolutely determined to make a lawyer of yourself, the thing is more than half done already. It is but a small matter whether you read with anyone or not.”

Spoken in his 2nd inaugural address, Lincoln preceded this line with, “It may seem strange that any men should dare to ask a just God’s assistance in wringing their bread from the sweat of other men’s faces; but let us judge not that we be not judged. The prayers of both could not be answered; that of neither has been answered fully.”
